Culturally Responsive Workshops
Dr. Nay, a best-selling author, published children’s literature, Sistah Girl: Step into Your Greatness, and Yo Bro: Strive Toward Excellence to fill the void of quality diverse literature in today’s classrooms. Poem titles like, Sistah Hair, Flavors of People, and Black Lives Matter are meaningful topics to adolescents of color. The books were written to help guide young adults through the murky waters of adolescence toward excellence by identifying their aspirations, teaching them their responsibilities as role models, and showing them how they can make a difference in the world as agents of change, especially during the current social climate. An accompanying teacher’s guide, with additional instructional resources will be published soon. The pedagogical concepts addressed are:
- Embrace acceptance/tolerance of diversity
- Encourage social emotional learning
- Empower with self-confidence/pride
- Explore culture and ancestry
- Enhance reading comprehension and critical thinking skills (via embedded literacy strategies, journaling, questioning, and scaffolding)
- Examine social justice issues
Dr. Nay is available for motivational speaking in school settings and/or adolescent-based organizations. She also offers professional development opportunities to assist teachers with cultural diversity training and the implementation of her instructional materials.
